Jianshu is a combat sport in which swords are used as weapons. It was developed centuries ago by the Chinese warlords and these days it has remained a complex fencing combat sport in which many techniques could be used to defeat an opponent. The sport is governed by an organization making sure the sport kept its own place in the modern sports arena. A comprehensive and standard rule of the game was developed that will be further explained on this page.
The first chapter of the rulebook includes the definition of the court, director and referee. The sport must be played in a squared court of 28 to 31 feet long on each side. The director must be located inside the court and he will start or stop the match at any time or when it is asked by the referee. The referees are in number of four and they are place in every corner of the court. They work in groups of two, formed by the referees on the diagonal line. The second chapter of the rulebook describes the techniques that are available and recognized during the match. This includes four main techniques, that of thrusting with the tip of the blade, of pecking with the tip of the blade in a quick and percussive manner, cutting with the tip of the blade in a circular movement and, lastly in a linear sawing movement. The target areas were further described which could be divided into two categories: primary and secondary, head, neck and torso and respectively limbs. The inner thigh and groin are not considered valid target areas. The following chapters contain relevant information about the equipment that swordsmen are allowed to use, as well as the rules of the game such as when the game is stopped or when one of the competitors wins.
