Five basic parries front view with variations. Parries are also know as open gate.  The moves are performed in the following order:  Gua, Jiao, vertical jiao, horizontal jiao (Ya), Bao, Jieh, Shiao, and Ti.

Liao (upward rising cut) vs Ti (lifting)


Liao is an upward cut with a circular drawing back motion for the follow through.  The counter for this move is Ti which lifts and guide the opponent's attack away from the center axis with the spine of the jian.   Ti  is an upper section parry.

cuo (File or edge thrust) vs Bao (embrace)


Cuo mean file in chinese.  The intention of this thrust follows through with the edge of the jian with a filing and rolling motion.  The defense for this move is bao (embrace) which uses the spine of the jian to guide the Cuo off the center axis.  Bao is a mid section parry.
