The Jian is a Chinese double edged straight sword that has been in use for the past 2,500 years. A jian was usually made with bronze, but as metal technology improved, this was changed to steel. Even though the use of swords has declined in actual warfare and self-defense thanks to the advance of fire arms, this sword can be used in a type of fencing competition and/or exhibition called jianshu, which is still taught is schools called wushu. The jian is known as the gentleman of weapons in Chinese folklore, and is part of the four major Chinese weapons, together with the Gun, the Qiang and the Dao, or staff, spear and sabre, respectively.
